Description

Attributed by VarietyVista with pending classification codes UVC-???? and DMR-0??, this 2003 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial Cent doubled die reverse exhibits a medium spread to the west, producing an extra column at position seven visible from the hand to the pedestal of the Lincoln statue. A foot appears between and below the statue's legs — a ghostly secondary impression created when the hub shifted westward between applications during die manufacture. The pending UVC and DMR codes indicate this variety awaits final cataloging assignment within the VarietyVista system. Column doubling on the Memorial reverse is among the most recognizable forms of hub doubling on Lincoln cents, as the narrow columns act as precise indicators of even slight positional displacement. Three die stages have been documented, tracking the die's progressive wear from early through late states. Frank Gasparro's reverse design, with its colonnade and recessed statue, made the Lincoln Memorial Cent a premier series for doubled die research throughout its 1959-2008 production run. The 2003 Philadelphia cent's high output ensured numerous dies were placed in service, increasing opportunities for hub doubling.
