2003 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-015
Error
Description
Listed in the Wexler Doubled Die Files as 2003 1c WDDR-015, this Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent shows doubling on the central left side of the 7th column to the right of the statue, with an extra knee visible between the statue's legs. The extra knee creates an anomalous silhouette that departs clearly from the normal Memorial reverse, making this variety identifiable once the searcher knows what to look for. The sole reverse die marker is a minute die gouge (dot) in the seventh Memorial bay, just to the right of the seventh column and slightly above the level of the top of the head. No significant obverse markers are recorded. Lincoln Memorial cents of 2003 are struck in copper-plated zinc at the Philadelphia Mint without a mintmark. Frank Gasparro's Memorial reverse provides an ideal surface for detecting hub doubling at the column and statue zone. Searchers should focus on the area between column 7 and the statue, watching for the extra knee and confirming the die dot in the seventh bay before attributing.
