2003 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-013

Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team, WDDR-013 of the 2003 Lincoln Memorial cent features a visually striking doubled die reverse with extra knees visible on the Lincoln statue inside the Memorial. Slight doubling appears on the lower right side of the sixth column to the left of the statue's feet, and doubling shows on the lower left side of the seventh column to the right of the statue's knees. Most notably, an extra knee can be found to the right of each of the statue's legs, providing an immediately recognizable pickup point for this variety. Obverse die markers include a small die gouge appearing as a dot above the B in LIBERTY. The reverse carries a die gouge to the left of the lower first column. The extra-knee feature is among the more dramatic doubled die effects possible on the Lincoln Memorial reverse, as the fine detail of the seated Lincoln statue amplifies even modest hub displacement into clearly visible secondary design elements. The 2003 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln cent was produced in large quantities, and the extra-knee characteristic makes this variety accessible to collectors who examine Memorial cent reverses for interior statue anomalies.
