2003 (P) Lincoln Memorial Cent - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-009

Description

2003 WDDR-009 is a doubled die reverse on the 2003 Lincoln Memorial cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. Strong extra thickness appears on USA, EPU (E PLURIBUS UNUM), the dots, the statue and the designer's initials, and to a slight degree on ONE CENT; the Memorial steps are extremely thick and wavy. Obverse Stage A: a small gouge at the rim, over the N in IN toward its left side, and a gouge on the front fold of hair just over the forehead. Obverse Stage B: a gouge just below the D in GOD on its left side, and a gouge under the RT of LIBERTY. On the reverse, Stage A shows a strong depression in the field along the rim, from 10:00 clockwise (CW) to 2:00, which Wexler reads as a sign that a hub or die was strongly tilted and then shifted back into proper alignment at some point in the hubbing; there is also a gouge (dot) in the lower part of bay 11. Reverse Stage B: a chip in the lower E of EPU, a chip on the upper left side of the second column, and a crack with a chip on the Memorial roof north of the second bay. Billy G. Crawford submitted Stage A and Brian Allen submitted Stage B. Crawford lists the variety as CDDR-010, and its Coppercoins number is 2003P-1DR-032.
