Description

Cataloged as UVC-3229 and DMR-026, this doubled die reverse on a 2003 Lincoln Memorial Cent displays medium spread to the west, producing an extra thin column number 7 visible from knee to foot. Four die stages have been documented: Stage A with reverse and obverse in early die state, Stage B in early-to-mid die state showing a light die crack running northeast from upper column number 4 on the obverse, Stage C in mid die state (unconfirmed), and Stage D in late die state (unconfirmed). The extra thin column 7 is a hallmark of Memorial Cent doubled die reverses where the secondary hubbing impression displaced the columnar architecture just enough to create a ghost column alongside the primary one. The progression from early die state through the development of the northeast die crack in Stage B documents the beginning of die deterioration during active production. Struck on copper-plated zinc planchets at the Philadelphia Mint, this 2003 cent bears the final years of Frank Gasparro's Memorial reverse. Attributed by VarietyVista.
