2003 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-017
Error
Description
Northwest-spread doubling on the 2003 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent produces a medium-strength extra column number 7 from knee to pedestal, along with an additional foot visible between the legs of the Lincoln statue. Doubling that affects the seated Lincoln figure inside the Memorial is among the most sought-after on this reverse type, because the statue's small scale concentrates even moderate hub displacement into visually interesting image separation. DDR-017 is cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-3223 and DMR-020, with Stage A documented showing both reverse and obverse in early die state. Stages B and C at mid- and late-die-state are unconfirmed, leaving the full production history of this die partially unresolved. The northwest direction of spread indicates the working hub was displaced toward the upper left during one impression, shifting design elements in that direction relative to the prior impression. On the seventeenth DDR listing for this date, variety researchers continue to find new doubled dies on Philadelphia Cents from the early 2000s, a period when annual cent production reached into the billions.
