2003 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-014

Description

Presenting medium spread to the southeast on the Lincoln Memorial reverse of this 2003 Philadelphia Mint cent, DDR-014 creates an extra column at the sixth position extending from knee to ankle on the Lincoln statue, along with a ghost knee visible between the statue's legs. The Memorial's twelve columns serve as sensitive indicators of hub displacement because their vertical lines translate even modest doubling into clearly visible secondary images. Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-3220 and DMR-017, the southeast spread distinguishes this variety from the eastward DDR-013 on the same date, as the angled displacement produces a diagonal offset rather than a purely lateral one. The ghost knee between the legs is particularly distinctive: the tiny seated Lincoln figure receives the same hub displacement as the surrounding architecture, but its small scale concentrates the doubling into a compact anomaly that can resemble a structural element rather than an error to the untrained eye.
