2003 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-013

Description

On the Lincoln Memorial reverse of this 2003 Philadelphia Mint cent, DDR-013 presents a medium spread to the east that manifests as an extra column appearing at the sixth position, extending from the shin of the Lincoln statue down to the pedestal, along with a ghost foot visible between the statue's legs. The Memorial's architectural columns are a favored canvas for doubled die effects because their vertical lines amplify even modest hub displacement into clearly visible secondary images. Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-3219 and DMR-016, this variety has been documented across three die stages: Stage A where both obverse and reverse are in early die state, Stage B in mid die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C in late die state (unconfirmed). The Lincoln Memorial reverse, designed by Frank Gasparro and introduced in 1959, features twelve columns and a tiny seated Lincoln statue within — design elements that have produced hundreds of cataloged doubled die varieties over the series' nearly fifty-year run.
