Description

Medium westward spread generates an extra column number seven — visible from the hand rail area down to the shin level — along with duplicated knee details on the Lincoln Memorial reverse of this 2003 Philadelphia Mint cent. VarietyVista lists this as DDR-011 with die markers UVC-3123 and DMR-014. Three die stages are documented: Stage A with both reverse and obverse in Early Die State (EDS), while Stages B and C at Mid Die State and Late Die State remain unconfirmed. Column seven is the second pillar from the right on the Memorial facade, and the westward displacement creates a visible shadow column adjacent to the primary design — a diagnostic that experienced cherry-pickers can spot even without magnification on well-struck specimens. The knee area doubling provides a secondary confirmation point, as the small seated figure of Lincoln within the Memorial sometimes shows perceptible displacement on stronger doubled die varieties. Frank Gasparro's Memorial reverse served the Lincoln Cent from 1959 through 2008, spanning nearly five decades and producing thousands of documented die varieties. The 2003-P cent production of approximately 3.3 billion pieces required an enormous number of die pairs, and the multi-impression hubbing process used to create each working die introduced occasional alignment failures that produced the spectrum of doubled die varieties documented by VarietyVista and other attribution services for this prolific date.
