Description

Denver's 2003 cent production represents one of the later years of the Lincoln Memorial Cent design that had been in continuous use since 1959, and WDDR-003 captures a hub doubling event from this mature phase of the series. During die manufacture at the Philadelphia die shop, the working hub bearing Frank Gasparro's Memorial reverse design shifted between successive impressions, embedding overlapping imagery into the die steel that would transfer to every cent struck. The Memorial reverse's architectural detail — with its precisely rendered columns, steps, and the distant seated Lincoln statue — makes even subtle hub displacement detectable through careful examination. By 2003, Denver was producing billions of cents annually, consuming hundreds of die pairs in the process, and statistical probability guaranteed that some fraction would exhibit detectable hub doubling. Each DDR in the 2003-D catalog preserves a unique combination of spread direction, displacement magnitude, and affected design elements that distinguishes it from every other DDR for the same date.
