Description

Holding the primary WDDO-001 designation for the 2003-D Alabama State Quarter, this doubled die obverse was struck at the Denver Mint during the fifth year of the popular 50 State Quarters program. Alabama was the 22nd state quarter released, appearing in 2003 alongside Illinois, Maine, Missouri, and Arkansas. The Alabama reverse, designed by Norman E. Nemeth, features Helen Keller seated in a chair with her name in English and Braille, alongside the state motto "Spirit of Courage" and a banner with a longleaf pine branch. As WDDO-001, this is the first cataloged doubled die obverse for this date and mint, with the doubling affecting the shared Washington obverse portrait used across all state quarter issues.
