2002-D Doubled Die Reverse DDR-001
Error
Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista under UVC-2985 and DMR-002, this 2002 Denver Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent is the first documented doubled die reverse for the date and mint, exhibiting light westward spread that produces an extra column number 7 spanning from the hand to the knee of the seated Lincoln statue. Three die stages have been documented: Stage A with both reverse and obverse at early die state, Stage B at mid-die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C at late die state (unconfirmed). As DDR-001, this variety serves as the foundational doubled die reverse catalog entry for all 2002-D cents, the benchmark against which subsequent discoveries are numbered and compared. Denver struck approximately 4.03 billion cents in 2002, an enormous volume that consumed hundreds of die pairs and produced sufficient statistical opportunity for hubbing anomalies. The westward (leftward when viewing the coin) displacement of column 7 creates a ghost column adjacent to the original, and the hand-to-knee span indicates the extra image covers the upper two-thirds of the column's full height. Frank Gasparro's Memorial reverse, by 2002 in its forty-third year of production, had accumulated thousands of documented die varieties across all dates and mints, and each new DDR-001 entry for a date establishes the beginning of that year's variety catalog within the comprehensive Memorial cent research framework.
