Description

The most significant doubled die obverse cataloged for the 1999 proof Susan B. Anthony dollar, DDO-001 exhibits a medium spread with extra thickness on LIBERTY, the stars, date, IN GOD WE TRUST, hair detail in the knot, collar, and mintmark. Attributed by VarietyVista with die classification UVC-018 and die marker reference DMR-003, this variety is documented across Stages A through C, indicating the die saw extended use before retirement. The 1999 SBA dollar holds special significance as the final year of Susan B. Anthony production, struck under the United States $1 Coin Act of 1997, which let the Mint keep striking Anthony dollars until the new golden dollar was ready, to replenish vending machine dollar supplies before the Sacagawea dollar debuted in 2000. As a Philadelphia Mint proof, this coin was struck with polished dies on specially prepared planchets, producing mirror-like fields that make the extra thickness on design elements easier to detect under magnification. The broad spread across multiple obverse elements makes DDO-001 one of the more visually compelling Anthony dollar varieties available to collectors.
