1999 (D) Delaware State Quarter - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

Struck on the very first issue of the 50 State Quarters Program, this 1999-D doubled die obverse holds the primary WDDO-001 designation for the Delaware State Quarter from the Denver Mint. Delaware, the first state to ratify the Constitution in 1787, was fittingly chosen to launch the program, with a reverse design featuring Caesar Rodney on horseback during his historic ride to cast Delaware's decisive vote for independence. The obverse doubled die resulted from a misalignment during the die hubbing process that created visible doubling on Washington's portrait and surrounding design elements. Cross-referenced as Crawford CDDO-001 and cataloged under the Wexler designation 1999-D DE WDDO-001, this variety benefits from Crawford's specialized State Quarter attribution system alongside the broader Wexler catalog. The 50 State Quarters Program generated public interest in coin collecting between 1999 and 2008, and doubled die varieties from the inaugural Delaware issue carry particular appeal as artifacts from the program's launch. Collectors should examine the obverse lettering and portrait details under magnification for evidence of the hub doubling.
