Description
Displaying an unusual visual effect, VDDR-003 on the 1996-D Lincoln Memorial Cent shows light spread eastward that manifests as an extra set of legs — doubling on the Memorial's columnar supports produces what appears to be additional pillars flanking the originals, an effect collectors describe as giving the building extra architectural legs. The Lincoln Memorial reverse, designed by Frank Gasparro and in use from 1959 through 2008, features twelve columns across the facade, and even light displacement on these thin vertical elements creates a conspicuous parallel-line effect mimicking additional columns. The variety is pending full UVC and DMR cataloging, with Stage A documented as early die state on both the obverse and reverse, and later stages unconfirmed. The 1996-D Lincoln Memorial Cent was struck at Denver in copper-plated zinc. Memorial column doubling ranks among the more visually accessible doubled die effects on the denomination, as narrow vertical lines make lateral displacement apparent at modest magnification — the "extra legs" description provides an intuitive shorthand for eastward spread on the columnar architecture.
