1996 (D) Lincoln Memorial Cent - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-005

Description

1996-D WDDR-005 is a doubled die reverse on the 1996-D Lincoln Memorial cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. The statue's legs are doubled along their right side. On obverse Stage A, gouges lie right of the R and right of the T in LIBERTY, and a scratch heads WSW from beneath the D of the designer's initials. Obverse Stage B comes from a new obverse die: a small gouge sits over the B in LIBERTY, toward its right side, and two gouges sit above the S in TRUST. On reverse Stage A, a short gouge runs WSW off the left Memorial base, and two short parallel gouges lie near the rim, left of that base. A gouge sits above the right cornice, a small gouge (dot) lies left of the upper part of the ninth column, and a gouge is NNW of the F in FG. By reverse Stage B, the markers from Stage A have weakened considerably. Three parallel WNW-to-ESE scratches lie between the T and A of STATES, and a gouge sits right of the foot of the twelfth column. Between the first and second columns, a die crack descends from the Memorial ceiling, and another crack follows the second column's upper left side downward. Many west-to-east scratches cross the Memorial and the area beneath it, and die pitting appears right of the statue's lower left leg. Tony Russo submitted Stage A and William Slaughter Stage B. CONECA lists it as 2-R-VIII.
