1996 (D) Lincoln Memorial Cent - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

1996-D WDDR-001 is a doubled die reverse on the 1996-D Lincoln Memorial cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. On the sixth column, left of the statue, a bar runs from the top of the knee down to the top of the foot. On the obverse, Wexler notes possible die gouges (or possibly damage to the coin) right of the mint mark. Gouges sit both left and right of the top of the E in WE, and another gouge is above the S of TRUST. On the reverse, light scratches run SSE from the Memorial base through the tops of the O and N in ONE. Heavy die chips lie between the upper and lower parts of the E in ONE and the C in CENT, and more heavy chips sit beneath the E and N in CENT. Feeder finger damage crosses the lower Memorial base and the T of CENT. A cluster of gouges lies between and beneath the T and E of UNITED, one gouge sits left of the first S in STATES, and another is right of the lower part of the second A in AMERICA. Tanner Scott submitted the variety. Wexler lists no cross-references. Wexler's comments explain that it replaces the first 1996-D WDDR-001 listing, a "wavy steps" variety. Wexler adds that wavy steps pieces are no longer thought to be doubled dies.
