1995 (P) Lincoln Memorial Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001 / DDO-001

Description

1995 WDDO-001 is a doubled die obverse on the 1995 Lincoln Memorial cent, cataloged by the Wexler team and by VarietyVista as DDO-001. Both catalogs give it the Cherrypickers number FS-101 (040); Wexler writes it FS-01-1995-101. Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties describes a strong Class V counterclockwise spread from a pivot near 4:00 on LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, the hair over the top and back of the head, most of all near the ear, Lincoln's eyelid, and lightly the 19 of the date. In obverse stage A a small die gouge sits on the vest south of the first 9, a dot lies between the two 9s, and a short die scratch runs NNE from the hair midway between WE and TRUST. Stage B shows heavy die pitting across the obverse's left side, above all around LIBERTY, and stage C is the same. In stage D many die scratches run SW to NE across the obverse; there are raised pre-die-chip areas in the lower R of LIBERTY and on the left side of its T, small die chips at the T's upper left and inside the top of the second 9, a die crack from the back of the ear down to the neck, curving north into the hair, and a die crack heading SSE from behind the lower lip. In stage E the chip in the second 9 is larger. Reverse stage A shows rough die surface around the NT of CENT and the FG initials, a dot left of the lower second A in AMERICA, die chips on the upper first column and the middle of the second, and a die crack on the roof above the fifth and sixth columns; stage B is the same. Stage C is a second reverse die, with a small die gouge above the left end of the Memorial base and a short vertical die scratch between the lower O and N of ONE. Stage D is a third reverse die, with a die scratch NNW from the middle left side of the second column and a short vertical scratch between the A and T of STATES. Stage E adds a short vertical gouge left of the upper second A in AMERICA and a gouge right of the bottom of the E in STATES. Dr. Gerald Fishman submitted the coin. CONECA lists the die as 1-O-V and Crawford as CDDO-001; its Coppercoins number is 1995P-1DO-001. VarietyVista, crediting Felix Dausilio, describes the spread as strong on the eyelid, the hair on top of the head, LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST, and lists two pairs of marker codes: UVC-2441 with DMR-002, and UVC-2442 with DMR-003.
