1995 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-001
Error
Description
Among the most celebrated modern doubled die varieties in all of American numismatics, the 1995 Lincoln Memorial cent DDO-001 displays strong spread on LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, the hair at the top of Lincoln's head, and the eyelid — a constellation of dramatically doubled design elements that generated widespread media coverage and intense collector demand upon its discovery. Cross-referenced as FS-101 (Fivaz-Stanton numbering, formerly listed as 040), this variety is documented across multiple die marriage records with VarietyVista identifiers UVC-2441/DMR-002 and UVC-2442/DMR-003, indicating the doubled obverse die was paired with at least two different reverse dies during its production run. Philadelphia struck approximately 6.41 billion cents in 1995, and the strong spread DDO-001 emerged from that enormous production as one of the few modern varieties to achieve mainstream recognition beyond the variety collecting community. Victor David Brenner's obverse portrait, in continuous use since 1909, reveals the doubling across a wide band of affected elements: LIBERTY along the left, IN GOD WE TRUST along the upper periphery, the hair detail at the crown of Lincoln's head, and the eyelid — each showing clearly separated secondary impressions visible under moderate magnification of 5-10x and in some cases detectable with the unaided eye. The FS-101 cross-reference connects this variety to the Cherrypickers' Guide, the standard reference for collecting major die varieties, confirming its status as the premier obverse doubled die for the date. The presence of two die marriage records (UVC-2441/DMR-002 and UVC-2442/DMR-003) indicates the doubled obverse was paired sequentially with different reverse dies as the Mint's normal die rotation progressed.
