1994 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

Designated Wexler Variety ID 1994 1¢ WDDO-001, this doubled die obverse on the 1994 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent exhibits extra thickness and separation on IN GOD WE TRUST, with the strongest spread concentrated on TRUST. Nice separation is also visible on most hair details at the top of Lincoln's head, and the eyelid shows slight doubling — a subtle but diagnostically important feature given the fine engraving in this area of the portrait. The die markers provide a comprehensive attribution profile across both sides of the coin. On the obverse, a die chip can be found in the upper B of LIBERTY, a die gouge appears near the rim at about 10:00, and a die gouge is located midway between WE and TRUST. On the reverse, a die scratch runs from the T in UNITED over the left side of the Memorial, and a die gouge appears between the lower C and E in CENT. The combination of motto doubling, portrait detail separation, and the die chip in LIBERTY makes WDDO-001 one of the more visually accessible doubled die obverses for this date and mint. No additional cross-references beyond the Wexler designation are currently known.
