1994-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002

Description

The second documented doubled die obverse for the 1994 Denver Lincoln Memorial cent, designated Wexler Variety ID: 1994-D 1¢ WDDO-002 by the Wexler Team, shows a doubling profile that extends beyond the date into the motto. Light extra thickness is visible on the date and on the letters WE TRUST, with a diagnostic notch present on the lower right of the R in TRUST — providing multiple attribution points across two separate design elements. This broader distribution of doubling across the die face suggests a slightly different hub-to-die misalignment geometry than WDDO-001, where the doubling concentrated primarily on the date and mintmark. Die markers solidify the attribution: on the obverse, a short die gouge runs north from the top right of the I in IN. On the reverse, a die gouge can be found between the lower N and T in CENT, and a die gouge can be found to the right of the lower T in CENT. The presence of two cataloged doubled die obverses for the 1994-D cent indicates that at least two separate obverse dies received imperfect hubbing impressions during the die preparation process at the Philadelphia die shop that supplied working dies to the Denver facility.
