1994-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001
Error
Description
Documented by the Wexler Team and designated Wexler Variety ID: 1994-D 1¢ WDDO-001, this doubled die obverse on the 1994 Denver Lincoln Memorial cent exhibits light extra thickness on the date, a diagnostic notch on the lower left of the 4, and a split lower serif on the D mintmark — a constellation of doubling markers that together fingerprint this specific die. Doubled die obverse varieties result from a misalignment between hub and die during the die manufacturing process: when the hub impression shifts slightly between impressions during hubbing, design elements receive a secondary, offset impression that appears as extra thickness, notching, or split serifs on struck coins. Die markers further confirm attribution: on the obverse, a die scratch runs southeast from the bottom of the T in LIBERTY, and numerous die scratches run from northwest to southeast through LIBERTY. On the reverse, a small die gouge can be found to the right of the upper T in CENT, and a die gouge can be found to the left of the lower O in ONE. These reverse die markers are essential for attribution because they confirm the specific die pair, not just the obverse die alone.
