Description
First cataloged cud on the 1993 Philadelphia Jefferson Nickel, where a section of the die rim fractured and broke away during production, leaving a cavity that filled with metal under striking pressure to produce a raised, featureless blob at the coin's edge. Cross-referenced as JNC-93-1 in the Jefferson Nickel Cud registry, establishing its position as the first documented cud for this date and mint combination. Philadelphia's 1993 nickel production of approximately 412 million pieces subjected each die pair to millions of high-tonnage impacts, inevitably driving some dies past the point where rim integrity could be maintained. Felix Schlag's original 1938 Jefferson portrait, still in use in 1993, creates specific stress concentrations at the rim-to-field transition that vary by position around the coin's circumference. The location and extent of this particular cud relative to the obverse or reverse design elements should be matched against the Cuds on Coins photographic reference for positive identification.
