Description

Second in the spiked head sequence for the 1993 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel, this variety preserves a die crack that ran from the rim into Jefferson's bust, producing a raised spike extending from Thomas Jefferson's portrait. Spike cracks on Jefferson Nickels can meet Jefferson's head at various locations — the forehead, the wig, or the back of the neck — depending on the path each crack takes from the rim. The 1993-P Jefferson Nickel was produced during a period when nickel production at Philadelphia remained robust, with the familiar Schlag design entering its fifty-fifth year of continuous service. Two spiked heads from this date means at least two of the year's obverse dies cracked into the bust. Cataloged by Cuds on Coins with no known cross-references, the variety was first documented on February 25, 2016 — more than two decades after the coins were struck, demonstrating that die variety research on Jefferson Nickels is an ongoing endeavor where new discoveries emerge from coins that have been in collections or bank holdings for years.
