1991-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-005

Description

One of the more visually distinctive doubled dies in the 1991-D series, WDDR-005 features a diagnostic vertical bar visible to the right of column 6 and left of the statue's shoulder on the Lincoln Memorial reverse. This vertical bar — an artifact of the secondary hubbing impression displacing design elements — serves as a primary identification point shared with WDDR-006 of the same date, though the two varieties differ in the precise positioning of the bar relative to the Memorial statue. Additional die markers establish the identity of this specific die: WNW-to-ESE die scratches pass through ERTY of LIBERTY on the obverse, with further scratches extending from Lincoln's nose and forehead area. On the reverse, E-W die scratches appear below the FG initials, above ONE, and through TED in UNITED, creating a pattern of linear surface marks that distinguish this die from all others in the 1991-D doubled die reverse series. Struck at Denver on copper-plated zinc planchets composed of 97.5% zinc and 2.5% copper, weighing 2.5 grams and measuring 19mm. Die Markers: Obverse: Two die gouges (dots) show between the letter N in IN and the G in GOD.
