Description

Combining two distinct doubling classes, WDDO-001 on the 1989-P Jefferson nickel exhibits both Class II (Distorted Hub) and Class VI (Distended Hub) characteristics simultaneously — a close spread directed toward the center that affects LIBERTY, the star, the date, and IN GOD WE TRUST. Attributed by Whaden Curtis, this dual-class designation indicates that the hub was both slightly warped (Class II) and slightly expanded or contracted (Class VI) during the impression that created this working die, producing a compound displacement pattern more complex than either class alone. The obverse carries a small die dot on Jefferson's nose in front of his eye — a precise positional marker — while the reverse shows light horizontal die scratches above the right side of the Monticello building. Philadelphia struck over 898 million nickels in 1989, and the enormous production volume makes documented WDDO-001 specimens statistically scarce relative to the total mintage. The inward-directed spread on LIBERTY and the date gives this variety a distinctive look under magnification: rather than the outward-radiating doubling most collectors expect, the secondary impression pulls toward the center of the die, creating split serifs and thickened strokes that point inward. This center-directed displacement is the signature of Class VI involvement in the doubling mechanism.
