1989 (P) Jefferson Nickel - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

Attributed by Whaden Curtis and cross-referenced in the Wexler Doubled Die Files as 1989-P WDDR-001, this Jefferson Nickel reverse doubled die exhibits a Class II, Distorted Hub Doubling with a close spread toward the center on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, intensifying from left to right. The obverse die carries extensive markers: a die crack runs from the rim to the top of Jefferson's head at the 12 o'clock position; strong vertical die scratches appear in the field to the left of the eye and lips; a strong vertical die scratch runs behind the head from the R of LIBERTY to the L of LIBERTY; and strong vertical die scratches occupy the field to the right of the queue. On the reverse, horizontal die scratches appear in the field to the right of the dome of Monticello, and strong strike doubling is present on E PLURIBUS UNUM. As WDDR-001, this is the lead reverse doubled die attribution in the Wexler sequence for the 1989-P Jefferson Nickel. The 12 o'clock die crack on the obverse is a highly visible and useful confirmatory marker. Jefferson Nickels have been struck in clad composition since 1966; the 1989-P is a high-mintage circulation issue from Philadelphia.
