Description

Classified as a Typical Die Clash and cataloged under the designation TDC-10c-1988P-01 by MadDieClashes, this 1988 Roosevelt Dime exhibits light clash marks produced when the obverse and reverse dies struck each other without a planchet between them. Die clashing occurs when a planchet fails to feed and the press completes its stroke, transferring incuse impressions of each die's design onto the opposing face. The resulting marks appear as faint outlines of the opposite die's elements — portions of the torch and bands from the reverse may ghost onto the obverse near Roosevelt's portrait. This specimen is from the collection of Ron Aquerre, and the MadDieClashes catalog includes an overlay demonstrating clash mark alignment with the opposing design. A "typical" die clash designation indicates the dies were properly aligned during the event, distinguishing it from atypical or misaligned clashes where rotational or lateral displacement adds complexity. Regular-strike Roosevelt Dimes from 1988 were produced in copper-nickel clad composition at the Philadelphia Mint.
