CU-10c-1988P-01R Cud
Error
Description
Documented by Cuds on Coins with no known cross-reference (recorded 10/01/2013), CU-10c-1988P-01R is a reverse rim cud discovered on the 1988 Philadelphia Roosevelt Dime. The "01R" designation indicates this is the first documented reverse cud position for the 1988-P dime, with the "R" suffix specifying the break's location on the reverse rather than the obverse. Cuds on Roosevelt Dimes are less commonly encountered than those on cents or nickels in part because the dime's smaller diameter (17.91 mm) means the die rim area is proportionally smaller, reducing both the surface area susceptible to fracture and the visual prominence of any resulting cud. The 1988 Roosevelt Dime was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in copper-nickel clad composition — a pure copper core bonded between outer layers of 75% copper and 25% nickel — weighing 2.268 grams. John R. Sinnock's Roosevelt Dime design, introduced in 1946 following the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt, features the president's profile on the obverse and a torch flanked by olive and oak branches on the reverse, with the reverse inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and ONE DIME. A reverse rim cud on the Roosevelt Dime interacts with whichever inscription and design elements fall at the break position, potentially affecting the torch, branches, or lettering depending on the specific clock position of the die fracture. The Roosevelt Dime series (Clad and Silver Proof, 1965 to date) encompasses the post-silver era of dime production, with clad composition replacing the earlier 90% silver content after the Coinage Act of 1965.
