1988-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-005

Description

Carrying the Wexler designation 1988-D 1¢ WDDO-005, this doubled die obverse exhibits a close Class II spread towards center on the date, with the strongest expression on the lower portion of the 9. Class II hub doubling — pivot-based rotation during die sinking — produces its most visible effects at the points farthest from the rotational axis, and the lower 9, positioned at the maximum radial distance among the date digits on the obverse die, consistently shows the greatest displacement on close-spread Class II varieties. This relationship between pivot geometry and doubling magnitude is a key principle in doubled die classification: by observing where the doubling is strongest and weakest, attributors can reconstruct the approximate location of the pivot point and confirm the Class II designation. The subtlety of "close" spread means this variety requires careful examination under at least 10x magnification to distinguish the true hub doubling from the shelf-like artifacts of machine doubling. A light die scratch running southwest to northeast in the field left of the back of Lincoln's head provides the primary obverse die marker, while no significant reverse markers have been noted. No cross-references to other attribution systems are currently known. Struck at the Denver Mint on copper-plated zinc planchets (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.5 grams and 19mm.
