1986 Repunched Mintmark WRPM-001

Description

Delisted as a repunched mintmark after further analysis, this former WRPM-001 for the 1986 Philadelphia Mint Roosevelt Dime was initially attributed as a P/P Northeast with a secondary mintmark struck in the field, but subsequent examination determined it did not meet the criteria for RPM classification. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 1986-P 10c WRPM-001, the cross-reference notation explicitly states "Not felt to be a RPM at this time, and has been delisted as such." Die markers remain documented despite the delisting: the obverse shows two short die scratches running north from the front of the hair, while the reverse displays an N/S die scratch along the lower left outside area of the N in UNITED and a short die scratch running south from the rim above the left side of the N in UNITED. The 1986-P Roosevelt Dime was struck during the modern era when Philadelphia coins carried the P mintmark — first added to dimes in 1980. The delisting of a variety provides valuable transparency in die variety research, documenting the process by which attributors review and sometimes reverse earlier determinations. The 1986 date falls in the modern clad era of Roosevelt Dime production, when the dimes were struck on copper-nickel clad planchets at high volume, and the distinction between a true repunched mintmark and a die anomaly in the field required careful analysis.
