1983 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-009

Description

Presenting as extra thickness rather than directional spread, WDDO-009 manifests its doubling on the date, IN GOD WE TRUST, and LIBERTY of the 1983 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent through abnormally bold letter strokes and numerals. Cataloged as Wexler WDDO-009 with no additional cross-references, this variety represents a close-tolerance hubbing misalignment where the secondary impression falls almost directly atop the primary, producing thickened design elements rather than clearly separated secondary images. The obverse displays remnants of a die clash to the left of the back of the neck and on the neck itself, confirming this die experienced a clashing event during its service life. Numerous die scratches running southwest-northeast pass through RTY of LIBERTY, and additional die scratches are visible on both sides of the bust. The reverse exhibits early die state characteristics with no significant diagnostic markers — a contrast to the obverse's accumulated damage that suggests this obverse die may have been paired with a relatively fresh reverse die as a replacement pairing.
