1983 (P) Lincoln Memorial Cent - Type II Counter Clash CCL(T2)-1c-1983-01

Description

CCL(T2)-1c-1983-01 is a Type II counter clash on a 1983-P Lincoln Memorial cent, cataloged by Mad Die Clashes. It is listed as CCLO-001 and carries Cherrypickers' Guide number FS-01-1983-401. A piece of foreign matter took an impression of IBER from LIBERTY and then passed it back to the working die in two places: at IBER of LIBERTY and over the date. The coin also has a large reverse die break (cud) affecting ONE CENT. Whether that break played a part in forming the counter clash is unknown, but no example is known without it. In comments MDC publishes, Mike Diamond suggests a piece of the reverse die probably broke off and was struck by the obverse die, while a planchet likely shielded the reverse. The first blow hit the fragment's side or broken face, so nothing transferred, but it distorted and doubled LIBERTY. Later blows moved the letters of LIBERTY onto the fragment, which then shifted to the right side of the chamber and was struck again, putting the letters in the field above the date. Diamond suspects three strikes in all and two counterclashes: the second strike returned LIBERTY to the obverse die as a Type II counterclash of LIBER set slightly off the normal letters, and the third put LIBERTY above the date.
