1983 Type II Counter Clash CCL(T2)-1c-1983-01
Error
Description
Listed as CCLO-001 and included in the Cherrypickers' Guide as FS-01-1983-401, this remarkable Type II counter clash on the 1983 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent was produced through a fundamentally different mechanism than Type I counter clashes. As explained by researcher Mike Diamond, a fragment of foreign matter — likely a broken piece of die steel — was struck by the obverse die, receiving an impression of IBER from LIBERTY. This fragment then contacted the obverse die in two separate locations, transferring the IBER impression both into the LIBERTY area and over the date, creating displaced letter impressions that could not have originated from any normal hubbing or simple clash process. Photographs courtesy of Billy Crawford document a coin from Joe Koelling's collection that also exhibits a large reverse cud affecting ONE CENT — notably, no example of this variety has been found without that die break, suggesting the counter clash and the cud may have developed in close temporal proximity during the die's service life. The foreign-matter mediation mechanism distinguishes Type II counter clashes from Type I varieties, which require two separate direct clash events. The FS-01-1983-401 designation confirms this variety's significance as a Cherrypickers-listed die variety worthy of premium valuation. Attribution by MadDieClashes. This particular error is also found with a large reverse die break (CUD) which affects the words ONE CENT. Concerning the “1983 1c CCLO-001, it’s likely that the piece of the reverse die broke off. The die fragment was then struck by the obverse die, with the reverse die probably protected by a planchet.
