1983 (P) Lincoln Memorial Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-005 / DDO-006

Description

DDO-006, which Wexler numbers WDDO-005, is a doubled die obverse on the 1983 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent with a light clockwise spread on both LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST. VarietyVista gives the CONECA number 6-O-V, clockwise from K-4 (4 o'clock); Wexler puts the pivot nearer 5 o'clock and cross-references the die as Crawford CDDO-002. Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties credits Matt Walton with submitting the coin and follows the obverse through three stages. In Stage A a small gouge sits just right of the bottom of the I in IN. In Stage B a heavy gouge lies between the rim and the bottom of the bust at about 5 o'clock, and by Stage C abrading of the die has left that gouge much fainter. The reverse markers stay the same through all three stages: a pair of diagonal scratches in the Memorial's second bay, a short scratch within the C of AMERICA, and a crack running from the lower right of the Memorial out to the rim. VarietyVista, also crediting Matt Walton, follows the die under its marker codes UVC-2372 and DMR-008 through four stages. Stage A, the early die state, shows a diagonal scratch between the G and O of GOD, with a clash in the third bay appearing a little later. Stage B, a middle die state, adds the dot-shaped gouge right of the lower I of IN, together with the reverse scratches in the second bay and inside the C of AMERICA and the crack from the lower right of the building to the rim. Stage C brings the heavy gouge between the lapel and the rim, and by Stage D, the late die state, that gouge has weakened. Wexler's Stages A to C therefore match VarietyVista's Stages B to D; VarietyVista's Stage A comes before the gouge by IN appears.
