Description

Although classified as a typical die clash, TDC-1c-1982-01(SD) carries the unusual characteristic of a 10-degree tilt between the dies at the moment of contact — a deviation from the near-parallel alignment that produces most standard clashes. This tilted geometry means the clash impressions are stronger on one side of the coin and weaker on the other, creating an asymmetric pattern that distinguishes it from level clashes. Found on the 1982 Philadelphia Small Date zinc cent, this die clash shows no signs of having been abraded by Mint personnel — indicating either that the clash went undetected or that the die was allowed to continue production despite the transferred impressions. The overlay published by MadDieClashes illustrates the relative angular position of the dies during the clash event. Closer examination reveals that the clash reaches down into the neck area of Lincoln's portrait, an unusually deep penetration of the design. Two die markers aid authentication: die cracks extending from the left cornice tip and from the left corner of the Memorial building roof. The Small Date zinc composition confirms production after the mid-1982 transition from 95% copper bronze to copper-plated zinc (2.5 grams). Attribution by MadDieClashes.
