Description

One of the most extensively cross-referenced 1982 Lincoln cent varieties, WDDR-002 carries attributions across four major systems: CONECA (1-R-IV, indicating the first cataloged variety with Class IV offset hub doubling on the reverse), Cherrypickers (FS-01-1982-801), Coppercoins (1982P-1DR-001), and the Wexler Team's own designation. The doubling itself is described as a strong spread to the east-southeast, visible on E PLURIBUS UNUM, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, ONE CENT, the left side of the Memorial, and most of the Memorial columns — an extensive spread affecting virtually the entire reverse design. This variety appears on the Small Date zinc composition, confirmed by obverse die markers including a die scratch running east-northeast from the top of the E in WE and another from the upper right T to the lower left R in TRUST. The reverse displays numerous east-west die scratches throughout, plus a distinctive circular pattern of die scratches in the Memorial bays. The CONECA Class IV classification identifies the doubling mechanism as an offset hub rotation, distinguishing it from the more common Class I through III doubling types. Struck on the post-transition copper-plated zinc planchet (2.5 grams) at Philadelphia during the pivotal 1982 composition changeover year.
