1982 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

First in the Wexler reverse doubled die sequence for the 1982 Philadelphia cent, WDDR-001 shows strong extra thickness on USA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, the designer's initials, and ONE, with visible separation lines on AMERICA and the D in UNITED — a level of doubling that makes this variety detectable under moderate magnification. The obverse die markers confirm this as a Small Date zinc cent: a die scratch runs north from the upper left of the I in LIBERTY. Reverse markers are particularly abundant — heavy east-west die scratches running north-northwest to south-southeast through the statue of Lincoln inside the Memorial, a die gouge (dot) to the right of the upper T in CENT, and two die gouges below the right side of the N in ONE. This wealth of die markers provides multiple authentication checkpoints for collectors examining candidate coins. The zinc Small Date designation places WDDR-001 within the post-transition composition (copper-plated zinc at 2.5 grams) and the small date punch style — the same subtype that hosts the Cherrypickers-listed DDR-001 (FS-1801), though WDDR-001 is cataloged independently by the Wexler Team without known cross-references to other systems.
