Description

Marking the year the P mint mark was restored to Kennedy Half Dollars after decades of absence from Philadelphia-minted coins, this 1980 DDO-001 variety was attributed by VarietyVista under die classification UVC-244 with marker reference DMR-002. The doubled die obverse shows a light spread on LIBERTY, with the doubling most pronounced on the letters TY. The die progressed through three stages: Stage A in early die state remains unconfirmed, Stage B in mid die state is also unconfirmed, and Stage C in late die state displays a die crack running north from the top of the T in LIBERTY to the rim, with the reverse also in late die state. The die crack at Stage C provides a definitive diagnostic for confirming advanced die state, and its location at the T of LIBERTY positions it directly adjacent to the area showing the strongest doubling. Collectors should examine the TY of LIBERTY under magnification for the characteristic light spread, and those finding a die crack from the T to the rim can confirm their specimen represents a late die state impression from this Kennedy Half Dollar die pair.
