CU-50c-1980P-02 Cud
Error
Description
Documented by Cuds on Coins under the designation CU-50c-1980P-02 and dated January 24, 2019, this cud variety appears on the 1980 Philadelphia-mint Kennedy Half Dollar. A cud forms when a section of the working die fractures and separates at the coin's rim, causing the corresponding area on struck coins to display a raised, featureless mass of metal where design elements would normally appear. The CU-50c-1980P-02 designation indicates this is the second documented cud for the 1980-P Kennedy Half Dollar — a coin that represents the early years of the modern clad Kennedy series following the transition from 40% silver clad to copper-nickel clad composition in 1971 for business strikes. Gilroy Roberts designed the Kennedy obverse, adapting his portrait from the 1961 presidential inaugural medal, while Frank Gasparro's heraldic eagle reverse features the presidential coat of arms with an eagle clutching arrows and an olive branch. The 1980-P Kennedy Half Dollar was struck in copper-nickel clad composition (outer layers of 75% copper and 25% nickel bonded to a pure copper core), weighing 11.34 grams and measuring 30.6 mm in diameter. No additional cross-references are listed for this variety. Kennedy Half Dollars from the early 1980s circulated in limited quantities, making cud errors from this period relatively scarce compared to more widely distributed denominations, and collectors typically source examples from uncirculated Mint sets or dealer inventories.
