Description

First cud variety documented for the 1980 Philadelphia Kennedy Half Dollar, CU-50c-1980P-01 records a die rim fracture on the largest circulating denomination of the era. Kennedy Half Dollars, with their 30.6mm diameter, present a substantially larger die face than smaller denominations, and the greater surface area means rim stress from striking pressure is distributed differently — though the rim remains the most vulnerable fracture point. The cud formed when a portion of the die rim broke away during production, and coins struck afterward carry a raised mass of featureless metal where the missing fragment left a void. The 1980-P Kennedy Half was struck in clad copper-nickel composition, carrying Gilroy Roberts's portrait of President John F. Kennedy on the obverse and Frank Gasparro's presidential seal reverse. Attributed by Cuds on Coins under catalog number CU-50c-1980P-01, this variety stands as the sole documented cud for the 1980 Philadelphia half dollar. Cud varieties on Kennedy Half Dollars are less frequently encountered than on cents or quarters, partly because lower production volumes mean fewer dies in service and fewer opportunities for rim fractures.
