1977 (D) Kennedy Half Dollar - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001 / DDO-001

Description

Strongest on TRUST, with a medium spread across LIBERTY, the date and IN GOD WE TRUST, DDO-001 on the 1977-D Kennedy half dollar is a doubled die obverse that Wexler numbers WDDO-001. It is cross-referenced as FS-101 in the Cherrypickers' Guide (Wexler writes it FS-50-1977D-101). Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties calls it a strong Class I counterclockwise (CCW) spread, on IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, the date and the front of Kennedy's neck. At obverse stage A a die gouge sits beneath the O in GOD, on its right side. By obverse stage B heavy abrasion of the die has left many scratches across the obverse, among them three parallel north-south scratches through the D in GOD and just to its right. On the reverse, stage A is an early die state with nothing significant; at stage B that die too shows heavy abrasion and is covered with scratches. Benjamin Mielke submitted the coin, and CONECA lists the die as 1-O-I. VarietyVista credits Michael L. Ellis with the report. Under its marker codes UVC-233 and DMR-002, obverse and reverse are in an early die state at stage A and a middle one at stage B. At stage C, a late die state, many north-south die scratches cover both the obverse and the reverse.
