1976-S Doubled Die Reverse DDR-002
Error
Description
Holding the DDR-002 position for the 1976-S Bicentennial Eisenhower dollar clad proof, this variety presents light spread on the lower right star, AMERICA, and DOLLAR on Dennis R. Williams's special reverse design featuring the Liberty Bell superimposed against the Moon. The Bicentennial coinage program — encompassing the quarter, half dollar, and dollar — replaced the standard reverses with commemorative designs bearing the dual date 1776-1976, and all were struck during both 1975 and 1976 with no coins carrying a 1975 date. VarietyVista documented this variety under UVC-079 and DMR-006, recording three die stages: Stage A where both reverse and obverse surfaces exhibit early die state characteristics, Stage B at EDS (unconfirmed), and Stage C also at EDS (unconfirmed). The consistent EDS classification across all stages suggests either limited documented die progression or that surviving specimens predominantly represent early production. The comments note this as a clad-nickel (CN) proof struck at San Francisco, with Obverse Design Variant ODV-008 and Reverse Design Variant RDV-004 providing additional attribution anchors. San Francisco produced Bicentennial proof dollars in both copper-nickel clad and 40% silver compositions, and distinguishing between the two is essential for accurate variety attribution. The light spread on the star, AMERICA, and DOLLAR indicates a modest hub displacement that affected the lower right quadrant of the reverse, with the spread visible but not dramatic. Collectors should examine these elements under 15-20x magnification, paying particular attention to the star points and letter serifs where light doubling is most readily detected.
