Description
The 1976 (S) Proof Clad Type 2 Eisenhower Dollar is a proof dollar struck at the San Francisco Mint, part of the Bicentennial Coins 1976 series. With a mintage of 4.1 million, this is a scarce issue — ranked 0th of 5 mint variants by mintage, with 2% of production. The obverse features Dwight D. Eisenhower facing left and the reverse displays an eagle landing on the moon with an olive branch in its talons, commemorating the Apollo 11 lunar landing. Dual-dated 1776-1976 with a special Liberty Bell superimposed on the Moon reverse. Two varieties exist: Type I (bold sans-serif lettering) and Type II (thinner serif lettering). No coins bear a 1975 date. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements prized by collectors. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, established during the California Gold Rush and now primarily producing proof and collector coins. Estimated market value is approximately $45. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel over a pure copper center, weighing 22.7 grams, 38.5 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7435.
