Description

The 1976 (S) Silver Eisenhower Dollar - Mel Wacks MW-17 Counterstamp is a 40% silver Bicentennial dollar from San Francisco that was counterstamped in 1982 for the 250th anniversary of George Washington's birth. Mel Wacks issued it as number 17 in his series of counterstamps, and Adam Cool engraved the design: Washington's home at Mount Vernon with GEORGE WASHINGTON FEB. 22, 1732-1982, a large 250, 13 stars and Wacks's MW initials, stamped over the Liberty Bell on Dennis R. Williams's reverse. Wacks wrote that fewer than the maximum of 1,000 were issued. It is a private piece, not a U.S. Mint issue, and the 250th anniversary it marks is Washington's birth, not the nation's semiquincentennial of 2026. The host coin is one of about 11 million 1976-S 40% silver uncirculated dollars the Mint struck, all with the Type 1 reverse. PCGS catalogs it as #890361.
