Description
The 1976 (D) Type 1 Eisenhower Dollar is a cent produced at the Denver Mint as part of the Bicentennial Coins 1976 series. Total mintage reached 21.0 million. The obverse features Dwight D. Eisenhower facing left, while the reverse displays an eagle landing on the moon with an olive branch in its talons, commemorating the Apollo 11 lunar landing. Designed by Frank Gasparro/Michael Collins & James Cooper. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel over a pure copper center, weighing 22.7 grams, 38.5 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7420. The Eisenhower Dollar honored both President Eisenhower and the Apollo 11 moon landing, combining the two themes on a single coin. The 40% silver blue-pack and brown-pack variants are collected avidly. The 1972 Type 2 (high-relief moon) and various die varieties add interest to this short series.
