Description

First documented in the 1984 book "The Lincoln Cent Doubled Die" (Page 203) and originally reported by John L. Blair, WDDO-003 is one of the earliest-known doubled die obverse varieties for the 1975 Philadelphia cent. In its original reference, it was listed as 1975 1¢ 1-O-III, and it carries the Crawford cross-reference CDDO-001. The doubling presents as a Class IV spread directed to the east on the digits 19 in the date and the letters TY of LIBERTY — a directional mirror image of WDDO-001's westward spread, making these two varieties complementary diagnostic studies in how hub offset can produce doubling in opposite directions on dies from the same production year. On the obverse, a light die scratch runs from west-southwest to east-northeast below the 9 in the date, and a die scratch runs from south-southwest to north-northeast behind the neck. The reverse carries several parallel die scratches running west to east between the second S in STATES and the O in OF, and a die scratch runs northwest from the upper right N in CENT. The Crawford CDDO-001 cross-reference connects this variety to one of the other major attribution systems for Lincoln cent doubled dies, providing collectors with an alternative catalog number for reference and trading purposes. Like WDDO-001, this variety's publication history stretching back to 1984 gives it a well-documented provenance that enhances its significance to serious variety collectors.
