1975 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002
Error
Description
Attributed as 1975 1¢ WDDO-002 by the Wexler Team, this doubled die obverse variety from the Philadelphia Mint displays strong extra thickness on both the date and LIBERTY, with the spread increasing progressively as the design elements move toward the center of the die. This progressive intensification of doubling toward the die center is a hallmark of certain hub doubling classes, where the geometric relationship between the hub and the die during successive impressions produces greater displacement at positions farther from the pivot point of the misalignment. The "strong extra thickness" characterization indicates that while the doubling may not present as separated, clearly split images, it produces a noticeably heavier, bolder appearance to the affected design elements compared to a normal die — thick enough to be visible without high magnification. No significant die markers have been noted on either the obverse or reverse, meaning attribution relies primarily on the doubling characteristics themselves rather than on secondary die diagnostics. The Wexler Team notes that no cross-references to other attribution services are known for this variety. Notably, the specimen examined by the Wexler Team displayed strong mechanical doubling (strike doubling) on the left side of the reverse — a separate, non-hub-doubling phenomenon caused by die bounce during the striking process that should not be confused with the genuine hub doubling on the obverse. Attribution by the Wexler Team.
