1975 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-002

Description

Identified by VarietyVista with Universal Variety Code UVC-3359 and Die Marriage Record DMR-003, the 1975 DDO-002 is the second cataloged doubled die obverse for the 1975 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Memorial cent. This variety displays light spread directed to the west on the letters RTY of LIBERTY and the digits 19 of the date. The westward directionality of the spread is diagnostically important: it indicates the hub shifted slightly to the west between successive impressions during the die-sinking process, and this directional fingerprint distinguishes DDO-002 from DDO-001, which shows spread in a different area and pattern. Hub doubling on the date digits is particularly valued by collectors because the numerals tend to be among the most scrutinized design elements on any coin — roll searchers and cherry-pickers routinely check the date first when hunting for doubled dies, making date doubling one of the easier diagnostic features to spot during rapid sorting. The combination of date doubling on the 19 and letter doubling on RTY provides multiple confirmation points for attribution, reducing the risk of confusion with strike doubling or other forms of die deterioration doubling that can superficially mimic genuine hub doubling. Philadelphia struck its 1975 cents without a mint mark from the standard 95% copper alloy, and specimens of DDO-002 circulated alongside billions of normal 1975 cents.
