Description

Documented as TDC-1c-1975D-02 by MadDieClashes, this dual clash event on the 1975-D Lincoln Memorial cent is among the more dramatic die clash varieties in the series. A typical die clash occurs when the obverse and reverse dies strike each other without a planchet between them, transferring incuse impressions of each die's design onto the opposing die face. In a dual clash, this impact happened more than once — sometimes at slightly different angles — producing overlapping transferred design elements that compound the visual complexity of the error. On this variety, two clash marks left by the roof of the Memorial building are visible passing through the first two digits of the date on the obverse. Other portions of the obverse die were heavily abraded by Mint personnel in an attempt to remove traces of the clash marks, though faint evidence of the transferred design can still be detected through the die scratches left by the abrasion process. The reverse die was similarly abraded and does not show clear indications of clash marks. An unusual die dent appears under the right base of the Memorial building, which may have resulted from a struck-through foreign object — a separate manufacturing anomaly that occurred independently of the clashing event. The combination of the dual clash, heavy die abrasion, and the possible struck-through dent makes TDC-1c-1975D-02 a particularly compelling study in the range of die damage that could accumulate on a single working die during high-volume production at the Denver Mint.
