Description

Designated FS-101 in the Cherrypickers' Guide, the 1974-D Kennedy half dollar DDO-001, which Wexler numbers WDDO-001, is a doubled die obverse with a strong spread on LIBERTY, the date and IN GOD WE TRUST. Wexler writes the cross-reference FS-50-1974D-101 (015). Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties records a strong counterclockwise (CCW) spread on those same areas and follows the die through two stages. At stage A the obverse has nothing significant, while the reverse is already in a very late die state with lettering that looks "mushy." At stage B the obverse has also reached a very late die state with the same mushy lettering, and the reverse is unchanged from stage A. John A. Wexler submitted stage A and William Slaughter stage B. CONECA lists the die as 1-O-I. VarietyVista credits John A. Wexler with the report and notes the coin can be found in Mint Sets. Under its marker codes UVC-217 and DMR-002, obverse and reverse are in an early die state at stage A and a middle one at stage B; a late stage C is unconfirmed; at stage D both sides are in a very late die state.
